if you register your skylanders on an xbox 360 console can you play those characters on a ps3 console

i have just gotten my son skylanders for our ps3. My sister has the skylanders for xbox 360. she told me that since she registered her skylanders to her xbox that the characters cant be played on other systems like the ps3. is this true?
